Hello, everyone. I hope you're all having a good day. I was just talking with a new friend, and she made me want to do 'that' again... By which I mean, share fairy tales! My home has so many fairy tales, and I love telling them to others. So if you'd like to hear one, just say so, and I'll spin a story with you!

Well then, have you ever heard the tale of Beauty and the Beast?

I actually don't think I ever have!

Once upon a time, there was an arrogant and handsome prince of a kingdom. He was selfish and vain, only believing in outer beauty. One day, an ugly old woman came to his castle door, asking for shelter from the harsh winter cold. She had no money, but offered a beautiful rose as pay. The prince was disgusted by her ugliness, and turned her away. But then the woman turned into a beautiful sorceress, and said that the prince would pay for having such an ugly heart.

Sounds like the prince kind of deserved it for being a shallow jerk. What exactly did the sorceress do to him?

She turned him into a hideous, monstrous beast, and turned all of his servants into living furniture. She said the only way for them to return to normal was if the Beast fell in love and was loved in return. But she then enchanted the rose, and told him that if he couldn't find someone to love him by the time the last petal fell, they would remain this way forever. The prince, now a beast, went into despair... for who could ever love a beast?

There had to be someone out there who would love him even though he was a beast, right? [Even if the prince was a shallow jerk, it would still be sad if he was stuck that way forever with no one to love him... And there was the matter of all his servants, too! They didn't even do anything wrong...]

The Beast didn't believe so.

Years passed... and in a nearby town, there was a girl named Belle. She was the most beautiful girl in the town, but everyone thought she was strange because she preferred to read over doing chores and finding a husband. Her father was an inventor, and his strange inventions also made him an outcast. There was also a hunter, named Gaston, who was the strongest and most handsome man in town. He wanted the beautiful Belle for a wife, but she rejected him over and over. She didn't want to be some simple wife to a man she had no feelings for.

Hmm... That makes sense to me! Being married to someone she didn't even like would probably be pretty miserable.

Also, does the story say what sort of things Belle's father invented? [Even though it's a bit of an aside, Jade is still curious.]

If I remember right, he had a moveable wood cutter... which he decided to enter into a contest in the next town over, while Belle waited at their home. But he was chased by vicious wolves, and was terribly lost. As night fell, he needed refuge, and came upon an old castle. Inside, he found a talking candelabra and a talking clock! They offered him food and shelter, but then, a hideous Beast found him, and accused the father of trespassing. He threw the old man into his dungeon!

Oh, no! [Poor guy. He was just trying to find a place to stay for the night!]

Belle was wondering where her father was, and set out to find him. She discovered the very same castle, and the very same talking objects, who led her to the dungeon. The Beast found her, and said he would let the old man go, if Belle took his place. Belle agreed, and the father was freed. The Beast and the servants wondered hopelessly if Belle could be the girl to free them from their spell. But so far, Belle and the Beast would do nothing but fight.

Well, considering he threw her father in the dungeon, that's not really all that surprising...

One night, Belle tried to run away into the forest, but she was attacked by those same vicious wolves. The Beast found her and saved her, but in the process got injured painfully. Now Belle could see he had a caring side to him, and stopped trying to leave. They began to open up to each other, and had many happy days together. The Beast even gave her his library, and she would read him books. Though Belle was happy, spending nights dancing in a ballroom with him, she still thought of her father...

Aww... Her father probably missed her a lot, too...

Her father was trying to rally up the villagers to rescue Belle, but his story was so insane, no one would believe him. trouble was brewing back in the village. Gaston was still angry that Belle had rejected him, so he devised a wicked plan, in that he would send the father to an insane asylum, in order to draw Belle out. No one dared to stop Gaston, for who could imagine such a handsome man to have such an evil heart?

Jeez, that's terrible!

As for Beauty and the Beast, the beast realized how sad Belle was, and showed her his magic mirror. It allowed them to watch anyone at any time, a final gift from the sorceress. There she saw her father being taken away, and called a madman! The Beast, with his renewed kindness, told Belle she could leave to go help him. She left with the magic mirror to prove her father was not insane, and the furniture wondered if they had lost their only chance at being cured. All the Beast wanted now was for Belle to be happy. Nothing else mattered.

Aww...

But wait! What about those wolves in the forest? Wouldn't it still be dangerous to go through there alone? Or did she go another way?

Once the Beast had defeated the wolves, they were too afraid to attack anyone in the forest.

Now, Belle arrived at the village, and showed the mirror to Gaston and the villagers, proving the Beast did exist by looking into it and seeing him there. Gaston and the villagers, however, were aghast at the Beast's ugliness, and formed a mob, ready to go and kill him. Belle chased after them, trying to explain that though the Beast was hideous, he meant no harm. When they arrived, the furniture put up an excellent fight, chasing the mob away... but Gaston still remained, wanting to kill the thing that tried to steal his 'prize!' The Beast and Gaston faced each other, and had a long, dangerous fight on the balconies. The Beast won, and spared his life, turning his back as he heard Belle returning... only for Gaston to stab him from behind!

It's really sad that all the villagers wanted to kill the Beast just because of the way he looked... And Gaston... Ugh! He just gets worse and worse.

Gaston thought he had won, but he was so arrogant in his victory that he didn't look where he was going, and fell off the castle, meeting his end. Belle rushed to the Beast, passing by the enchanted rose, which was losing its last petals. She cried over the Beast as he began to die, but he said he had no regrets, for he got to see her one last time. Belle held onto him, begging him not to leave her... and she finally admitted she was in love with him.

Aww...

Suddenly... a beautiful glow began to emanate from the Beast! He had finally found love, and his love was given in turn. The spell was broken, and as it turned him from beast back into man, the wounds were gone, and the magic spread throughout the castle. The enchanted furniture were people once more, and the Beast was the Prince, now changed forever in his heart. In knowing her, he had become a better person, who cared for others, no matter how they looked. Everyone rejoiced, and the Prince and Belle were married, and everyone lived happily ever after.
